Last week, the Student Federation won a victory!

With student interests in mind, the SFUO worked with the uOttawa administration to bring us 24h Morisset Library access during the upcoming exam period! (Starting Dec. 9th)

Therefore, we no longer have to pull all-nighters in our apartments, but at the library with access to books on every floor!

This school year, things have been a little different at our favorite student bar... We now have quite a different crowd at toonie tuesdays then the usuals from last year. However, it is not a problem! Thursdays has become the new night of fun and adventure. Vive la francophonie!

In other news... I dislike people who poster over my posters. It's mean. Please stop. Also, Tools of Change is also going on this weekend, and Stephen Lewis is tomorrow at 7pm! If you have not yet gotten your ticket, they will also be selling them at the door so make sure to get there early.

I'm not just saying this because I'm (obviously very) biased - but because things are looking good for PIDSSA.

Bluesfest-extravaganza!

This summer hasn't been too bad. Not bad at all.
Despite the rain - every day - there have been some good things to it as well!

1. Bluesfest!
I was there mostly as a volunteer, but I did get to see some great shows!
- Girl Talk : Even if I only saw the first 10 minutes of the show, it blew my mind. I had the most amazing 10 minutes of the whole festival! The only problem with the show was the waste of toilet paper... but it did add something fun to the show.
- KISS : They had fireworks!
- Matisyahu : I was in the beer tent at the time that he was playing, but it was still some amazing music!

It was my first time being a volunteer, and let me tell you, it was a lot of fun! Although, I did get the flu and couldn't move for a few days, I still had the time of my life.

2. Mama Flynn
She's in town for a few days, and she's the most wonderful woman! I love her :)

Now, let's get some sun mother nature! I want to go to the beach!!

I have had this blog long before I ran in the PIDSSA elections, therefore it has nothing to do with my position, nor the views of anyone else on the PIDSSA executive.

Faculty of Social Sciences - Latest News and Events :

Congratulations to François Houle, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, for his nomination as Vice-President Academic and Provost of the University of Ottawa. He will be replacing Robert Major, the current Vice-President Academic and Provost, as of July 1st, 2009.

There is still no news on who will replace him as our new dean of social sciences. I wonder who it will be... Hopefully a political science or development prof..?

It has been forever since I have posted anything so here we go...

This summer has been busy with all the student associations! Getting ready for 101 Week, picking themes, starting up Shinerama, etc.

Leaderaction went great as well! It was at the beginning of May and we all met each other at our different sessions and round tables.

There have also been a few round tables throughout the summer : ShineRTs, SRTs, PRTs, and so on!

I wonder what artists are coming for Fedstock?

The Appeal Finally Comes to a Close

The Student Arbitration Committee has finally come to their decision regarding the SFUO Election Appeal, and thank Homer it's finished.

Just a few recommendations :

1) Leave the SAC decision alone. There's not a whole lot anyone can do now.

2) We all have better things to do then to worry about this mess any longer.

3) Let's get on with our lives.

4) It's only the SFUO... it's a small, small, small, little, tiny, fraction of the world.

5) Have fun with your time at the University and stop worrying about stupid matters.

One more thing...

6) Study for your exams. Remember why you came to University in the first place: to receive a piece of paper that allows you to work in a multitude of different places.

I go out for a smoke, and a short study break outside, and I run into Marc Kelly along the way.

He was trying to get into the library with a picture of his student card on his iPhone.

The library people were a little skeptical about letting him in, so he said "I have the student newspaper (La Rotonde), and they wrote an article about me, obviously I'm a student".

They let him in, not knowing who he was.

I thought this encounter was a good story.

If you did not know already, Mr. Kelly is now allowed back on campus.

If you're in Public Administration, Political Science, International Studies and Modern Languages, or International Development and Globalization make sure to get informed as of Wednesday.

I have heard that various blogs will be covering the elections, as well as the campus media (La Rotonde and The Fulcrum).

Check out this website for all of the information that you will need.

I will be running in the elections, but I will not be promoting myself on my blog (conflict of interest), so you will have to find my platform on the elections website.

Here we are at the infamous BOA meeting. I am currently sitting on the floor of the Senate room in Tabaret. The room is packed with students and all the chairs are filled.

The meeting started a few minutes late with Federico announcing that this meeting will be held in a positive space. That basically means no threats, no discrimination, ect. He also brought an anti-harassment officer along for the ride.

So, who is all here in the audience who does not sit on the board as a director? Renaud Garner is here, so is Tyler Steeves, Sydney Loko, Jean Guillaume, Kyle Simunovic, Tristan Dénommée, Aminka Belvitt, François Picard, Iain Brannigan, and Jeremy Stuart.

Federico also took attendance; Kyle A. Ryc sent a proxy, same with Ted Horton. Then he read the agenda.

5:15pm: Dean Haldenby, the current President of the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa (SFUO) presents his motion (see a previous post to read the motion).

5:30pm: Questions on the motion.

5:45pm: Discussion on the motion.

6:00pm: I came back from a smoke. From what I gather, they are trying to keep the appeal process open to the public in the future. The president of the Common Law Student Association stood up from the audience and said that the law allows them, and for transparency reasons, they should do it.

* Also, I spoke with Cam Grey outside, he left the BOA meeting due to the fact that he was so hungry he was going to pass out. *

6:06pm: Motion to render the appeal process open fails. Also, Amy Kishek is abstaining from all votes due to bias.

6:07pm: Mike Fancie proposes an amendment that when the meetings will be held privately, there will be a safe space for the audience in real time to watch the process, “with sound preferably”.

6:13pm: Voting on the “live watching room”.

6:14pm: Motion passed, unanimous vote.

6:20pm: Some crazy talk about breaking the Constitution. I stopped following after a while.

* The meeting isn’t as heated as most of us expected. *

6:32pm: According to Kishek, someone called the University fire department because the room is over capacity. Finally, some drama. The senate room is only supposed to hold 75 people. Currently there is well over that number.

6:33pm: Iain Brannigan has left the room. Also, we just heard a fire truck pass by somewhere outside.

6:40pm: There still is no fire department.

6:50pm: PIDSSA election candidates leave the room. We were gone for an hour because of the all candidates meeting.

7:50pm: Back at the BOA meeting. Dean’s motion was passed.

7:58pm: A knock at the Senate door, Aminka enters.

8:06pm: Micheal Brown just resigned.

8:07pm: BOA meeting over.

A motion for the SAC Appeal presented by the current President of the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa.

Whereas there is a case contesting the 2009 elections between Garner, Hasinoff, and Chaput v. Wolfe, Dubois, Séguin and Guillaume, hereafter referred to as “the case”.

Whereas irregularies in the process of the case before the Student Arbitration Committee have put the credibility of the committee into question.

Whereas the decision rendered by the Student Arbitration Committee could potentially violate the constitution of the Federation.

Whereas the implications involved in allowing this case to continue in the present context could cause legal ramifications for the Federation.

Whereas the Board of Administration has the following powers, as outlined in the constitution and state the following:

The Board of Administration administers the affairs of the Federation in every respect and has full powers to manage the affairs of the federation, conclude or cause to be concluded, in its name, any contract that it may legally conclude and, subject to the bylaws,exercise in general all powers and take measures allowed by the letters patent and applicable laws.

Whereas the ultimate decision making body of the Federation is the Board of Administration.

Whereas the hearings into the case have shown to pose a possible threat to a members’ right to a positive space.

Whereas the hearings must be heard in a way that is fair and just.

Whereas it was suggested by the Federation’s solicitor to the Student Arbitration Committee to request direction from the Board of Administration, before concluding its latest decision.

Whereas it is a Federation member’s right to contest the elections.

Whereas the advice of the Federation’s solicitor, Vice Hunter Labrosse LLP, as per: Marc R. Labrosse was sought on this matter, and that his recommendations were as follows:

…that if the BOA first determines that it is in the best interests of the SFUO to restore some calm to the situation and intervene, the following three options which we discussed with you would be reasonable:

1. To appoint three (3) new members to the SAC and allow the participants to exercise their rights under section 8.6.1.4;
2. To allow the parties to exercise similar rights as under 8.6.1.4 and select from amongst the members of the BOA who would be prepared to sit at ad hoc arbitrators despite 8.3.1.1;
3. Appoint an independent arbitrator (with formal legal training) to hear the appeal.

Be it resolved that the Board of Administration of the Federation reorder a new hearing into the contest of Garner, Hasinoff, and Chaput v. Wolfe, Dubois, Séguin and Guillaume, presently before the Student Arbitration Committee.

Be it further resolved that the Board of Administration of the Federation relieve the Student Arbitration Committee from the current case and set in place a panel of three directors of the Board of Administration of the Federation to hear the case.

Be it further resolved that Garner, Hasinoff, Chaput select one of three directors on the panel; that Wolfe, Dubois, Séguin, Guillaume select one of the three directors on the panel, and by doing so the parties agree to the decision of the panel; and that the two directors on the panel selected by each party shall decide upon the third director on the panel, whom shall chair the panel.

Be it further resolved that the Board of Administration of the Federation shall choose the final director on the panel, should the directors selected to be on the panel be unable to come to a decision on thethird director on the panel.

Be it further resolved that a director on the panel must not be in her own cause, a witness or a representative of the implicated parties.

Be it further resolved that the panel will follow the minimum guidelines to abide by in relation to sections 8.4.2.2 and 8.4.3 of the constitution of the Federation.

Be it further resolved that the full procedure and any rulings in regards to procedure will be agreed upon by a two-thirds vote of the directors on the panel.

Be it further resolved that minutes of all meetings and panel hearings of the meetings shall be voice recorded and released to the public.

Be it further resolved that the panel hearings ensure a positive space, that they are video recorded for public distribution, that they are closed to the general public, and that they are open to the following:
(a) All directors of the Federation, including the executive of the Federation
(b) The chairperson of the board of administration of the Federation
(c) All parties involved in the contest of the elections
(d) Counsel of all parties involved, pursuant to 8.7.1 of the constitution of the Federation
(e) Any witnesses called to the hearing by the parties involved in the contest of the elections
(f) One staff member from “The Fulcrum”
(g) One staff member from “La Rotonde”

Be it further resolved that the decision will be rendered by a two-thirds vote of the directors on the panel.

Be it further resolved that the decision will be rendered as soon as possible.

Be it further resolved that the decision may be appealed within two business days of the decision being rendered by the panel to the board of administration by one of the parties by submitting a request in writing to the chairperson of the Board of Administration of the Federation. The Board of Administration of the Federation may only overturn the decision of the panel by a vote of two-thirds of the directors present. The decision on the appeal is final.

I've been trying to post the video for hours.

Unfortunately, I am not all that technically able with computers and such, so it's not going up on my blog.

Also, my apologies to those who are involved in this "scandal". Life will go on, it's only student politics. A word of advice, friendship is more important than the SFUO.

I can not believe how crazy this is getting. It is a civil war in this University, everyone is divided amongst each other and in my opinion, it's childish. This will all smooth over in the course of time. A long wait? Maybe. Worth it? Yes.

Well Marc Kelly was. I heard that him, along with some friends went to ask a bunch of questions to Allan Rock during the question period of his presentation. On the bright side, Rock didn't kick him or his friends out of the room. However, Protection was there watching their every move.

As I am sitting in my room, still awake at 6 in the morning, finishing a project, I come across Tristan's blog. It's updated.

He has two attached documents, one is what the individuals are asking for, and the other, the witnesses against Seamus Wolfe, Roxanne Dubois, Jean Guillaume and Julie Séguin. They apparently have nothing against Ted Horton.

The witnesses include, Amy Kishek, Aminka Belvitt, Sidney Loko, Alex Chaput, and Cameron Montgomery. It's understandable that the people who didn't win their elections are fighting against the formations of slates, but why in the world are Kishek and Belvitt having a tell-all when they won their positions?

I honestly do not understand what's going on. I mean, if there was actually a slate going on, then yes, they should be punished for it. However, from my knowledge, the students voted for individuals during the campaign. I heard from none of those candidates urging me to vote for other candidates as well. Every one I talked to had their decisions made at one point or another about individuals they were voting for, not the "Seamus Progressive Party of the University of Ottawa".

It's all up to you to decide whether you are with the "impeachment" - lack of a better word - of the candidates.

The elections just wont leave us alone.

As most of you probably know, some people are very unhappy in regards to the SFUO election results. They are now accusing the winners of forming slates.

Today, Tristan told me that he had received an e-mail last night about Julie Séguin and how she was promoting other candidates before the elections started.

Before the elections started : against the rules? since the campaigning hadn't even begun?

I have now decided to make this website an official facebook "page". So now, you can become a fan of iBlogSFUO. You can debate about various things that you don't agree with, or your hatred towards SFUO in general.

I have also decided that robots are not really threats anymore. Neither are aliens or zombies. We should really be worried about something computers like to call the "Internet". We should make it our ally before it destroys the whole human race. Oh wait, it's already working on it...

I'm not talking about our dear friend Seamus Wolfe here, I'm talking about the most powerful man on earth arriving on Parliament Hill today. President Barack Obama arrived in his Air Force One and met with our lovely Governor General Michaëlle Jean at around 10:30 this morning. He is currently sitting with our Prime Minister, Stephen Harper and having a nice little chat about the war, the economy, free trade, etc. breakfast conversation really.

Mr. Obama gave the canadians who are presently standing outside in the freezing cold a nice little wave and greeted us as he walked into the hill.

I hope that he enjoys his stay in the great white north today, because I can not wait for him to come visit us again.

Oh by the way, one of Obama's official peoples is keeping an "Obama's visit to Canada" blog. It's actually quite humorous.

Election night

At the moment, my camera is with a friend of mine, but keep on checking, and they will be posted shortly.

I just want to congratulate all the candidates, elected or not. This was an amazing journey for everyone who took part, and I'm very impressed with how the past week and half went.

As for a bit of news from last night,

I was smoking outside at around 11:45 and all you could hear was a very loud group of people coming up the stairs. There was about 20 RPG supporters who came rallying up to 1848 to hear the results chanting "RPG, RPG, RPG". It was quite a site. A few minutes later came the Wolfe supporters. They were bigger and louder, chanting "So, so, so, solidarité" and other rally chants.

The Terminus was even louder. It was packed with people waiting to hear the results. Dean Haldenby was heard saying "another 5 minutes to an hour". Not too long after, Wassim was greeted as he walked in.

Today in the UCU Lounge, I met up with some candidates including Ted Horton, Amy Kishek, Roxanne Dubois, and Jeremy Stuart.

I'm pretty sure that they are all laking a lot of sleep since Horton and Stuart were having a sing-along and Dubois and Kishek were hysterically laughing. It's a good thing that today is the last day of the elections, because every one is going crazy! Including me.

I can't wait until the results and for the war of the iBattle to commence. Tonight, we will dance is hell.

Renaud Garner did a class presentation in my management class. I was very surprised to see that the management candidate himself, Tyler Steeves was not there.

During the presentation, one student sitting somewhere in the back got up and said "Je connais cet homme! Il dit la vérité!" ("I know that man! He speaks the truth!"). Also, when RPG left the class, my prof said "He's the man!".

I'm guessing people in management like our wonderful philosophical candidate.

ARTS Relay For Life - Pie in da face!

This week, Toonie Tuesday at 1848 started off with a bang!!

ARTS' Relay for Life team put on a fundraiser where the SFUO hopefuls get pied in the face. What a wonderful (for me) and embarrassing (for the candidates) idea!

Jeremy Stuart was the first one to get pied for the night. Ted and Cameron also got their share of cream.

The social candidates were a good time as well. Joël Larose got the first throws. He was pretty excited about that. Then DJ Snuggle Bots had their turn. Dario purposely got Chaput in the crotch instead of the face, it was quite the surprise.

"Like the University, I have visual standards and right now, they are not being met". - Austin

Julie Séguin got destroyed by Joël and many others. Unfortunately, Roxanne Dubois did not participate, but she did donate money to Relay For Life.

The candidates for the B.O.A. got absolutely demolished by white pie stuff, especially Iain Brannigan. Austin was the first to go for this round.

All presidential candidates were there, except for Marc Kelly. He was no where to be found (and hasn't been very "in the game" lately either). Renaud (of course) was the first one to get pied, then Steeves, then Seamus. All you could hear from RPG was "OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! THAT'S DISGUSTING! OH MY GOD!"

I talked to Kyle Simunovic today and he said that he spent $60 on pies. Most of them went to Iain. But in the end, it was RPG that got creamed the most (that's what she said?).

Spotted : Ted Horton taking a nap in the UCU couch lounge. Later on last night I asked him why he was so tiered (a pretty obvious question, I know) and he said that he was "dreaming of democracy".

He's been campaigning like a champion and he also said that staying up late the night before for the Recycle Mania concert at 1848 took a lot out of him.

In other news from last night (before the pie in the face deal), I ran into both Austin and Amy Kishek. They were having a little picnic together. Amy said that it was a "coup d'état".

The candidates are getting restless!

Also, I heard that RPG got a hold of Ivy O's pen. It is now disappeared... duh duh duh...

PIDSSA Empire Strikes Back

Last night in Café Alt, PIDSSA's VP Socials - Iain Brannigan and David Boulay hosted an event to go with the 101 week theme, the Empire. So to stick with the motif, they came up with the idea of doing a showing of Star Wars : The Empire Strikes Back.

Among the people there were Peter Flynn, and Iain Brannigan. Although Peter has been keeping very busy with his campaign and with school work, he found the time to stay and support PIDSSA's endeavor.

Aminka and Miatta made a brief appearance before running off to do class presentations.

There was not a very big turn out, probably due to the fact that the date for the event got changed about 5 times. However, some people brought food and drinks and everyone seemed to be enjoying their night.

Even Morgan Gibbens came for a little bit of a pretend Star Wars battle with Peter Flynn.

Lundi soir, j'ai eu la chance de parler avec Julie Séguin. La seule candidate pour la position de VP Communications. Comme vous le savez probablement, il existe une campagne contre Julie Séguin mise en place par Tristan Dénommée.

Séguin m'avait dit qu'elle et Tristan ont eut une conversation lundi, mais que ce n'était pas à propos de ce sujet.

Other than Tristan's anti-Julie campaign, she's doing very well and working really hard. "No one has expected so much from an unopposed candidate."

Then I asked her about the orange. She said that it had nothing to do with her political stance, but she chose orange because it's a "hot summer color and a party color that has nothing to do with gender either". She will be wearing orange until Thursday.

UofO Young Conservatives

Last night in the basement of the Royal Oak, the UofO Young Conservatives had a meet and greet for the SFUO candidates. In attendance were Tyler Steeves, Renaud Garner, Miatta Gorvie, Amy Kishek, Peter Flynn, Austin Menyasz, Ted Horton, Alex Chaput, Maureen Hasinoff, Kyle Simunovic, Cameron Montgomery, Sarah Jayne King, Melanie Book, Scott Bedard, and Steph (?).

The event was very exciting, despite the fact that I was very uncomfortable to be there. All the candidates got their turn to speak for a few minutes about their platforms and ideas.

Maureen : Something about how we need to work more with the administration because we have a bad relationship with them. Students need to know how the SFUO manages it's money. We have to work more with 1848.

Cameron : Running for University Affairs (*the crazy acid posters*). Again, need to work with the admin. Something about bashing Drop Fees (*not too sure what she meant there...*). "We need to turn into real people".

Ted : Another "building relationships with the administration". Working more with the People's Republic of Delicious. Improving our campus - wireless internet everywhere. Improving our community - student housing. Student rights and concerns - basic things that need to be improved. *Great speech, the crowd loved him*

Chaput : Better communications. Working with the student media - The Fulcrum and La Rotonde to help promote events. He wants more large scale events and quality planning, organizing, promotion. Make 101 week more accessible. Events with more drinking (*good idea*). And again, building better relationships with the administration.

Kyle Simunovic : The "double dipper". "What is going to give us the best image and the best relationship with the administration". *He gave a short, but sweet heart warming speech. Not bad, not bad at all.

Austin : *Because of the fact that he has been getting no sleep, and not eating well, he said that he was buzzed off of one beer. Oh Austin.* He said that he will start the "common sense revolution". (*whatever that means*) He wants to fight for better class sizes. He also said something about not being a "macaroni box shaker" (*um... a what?*)

- Hockey game score : MTL - 2 Flames - 3

Amy Kishek : "We're there as student representatives, not student politicians". She admitted that the current VP Uni Affairs (Seamus Wolfe) and Undergrad B.O.G. Rep. (Ryan Kennery) had never sat down in a meeting together, so she wants to work with the VP Uni Affairs to build that relationship. She wants more student representation on the B.O.G.

Peter Flynn : "Is that the suit that you had on yesterday?" (random student) "I put deodorant on" (Peter). Haha

Steph : (*who are you?!?* - I guess she is running for B.O.A. for Social Sciences...*) All she wants is to improve visibility. (*that was her whole speech*).

Miatta : Equity. Ethics. Empowerment. Student policy maker for the B.O.A. "All that matters is what's best for the students".

Sarah Jayne King : She's for the Bon Apétit referendum - food security on campus. More student spaces.

Melanie Book : Voice against personal political views. Dissatisfied with the current Arts senate representative. "When you're on your MacBook, when you're reading your text book, think about voting for Mel Book for the B.O.A. and the Senate for ARTS".

Scott : Reference to political views "whether you are a conservative like most of you, a liberal like me and many others, or an NDP like her (*points directly at me*), think about what's best for all of us". (*I almost shit my pants. It was bad enough that I was the only lefty there, but it was a good joke.*)

ANNOUNCEMENTS!

RPG : (*Reference to Marc Kelly*) "Court jester". (*Takes out the NO CFS button*) "We now also need to fight against this".

Austin : "Everybody is going again?!"

Steeves : "Just because I didn't think of certain ideas, it doesn't mean that I wont work for them".

Tonight was an excellent night actually. There was a concert going on at 1848, where Alex Bevington and his band were playing (I finally met the guy), there was the U.O. Young Conservatives (more soon) in the basement of the Royal Oak, and I found out what a bannager was - thank you Seamus.

I am not disclosing the bannager information, but to find out, you will have to join me at 1848 tomorrow night for Toonie Tuesday and ask one of the snazzy bar tenders for one.

Also, my facebook inbox has been getting a damn good time tonight within the past hour. The candidates are taking advantage of the web/f-book to tell me that I have to do something from 6am until 9pm Thursday? Oh yeah, vote. I forgot this election wasn't just for me to have something to do for a week and a half.

"It's hard to tell how I'm doing in the campaign, since you basically only have your own judgment, but I'm having a good time."

He would least be up against Sarah Jayne King when it comes to the last straw. He thinks that she is his strongest opponent because she's "articulate, bright, with solid ideas". I think it's cute that they're dating :)

"I based my platform on what I actually think. Ideas that are important to me and hopefully I will be able to change people's minds when it comes to the important issues."

Tyler Steeves

In contrary to his scandal. I ended up having a good interview with the presidential candidate, Tyler Steeves (since when do I ever do interviews?). Anyways, he was coming out of CHUO headquarters from an interview and I got to grab a few words with him.

Savva : How's your campaign coming along so far?

Steeves : The campaign is going along wonderfully, it's really exciting and I'm having a good time.

Savva : How do you think that your experience in rez will affect you being a good president? Do you think it's an advantage or a disadvantage?

Steeves : Absolutely, 100% an advantage. We got amazing training to be community advisors, and I was there for two years. And also the leadership you get from having a floor that you're in charge of for two years, running events for hundreds of people at different times, advertising for those events, making them happen successfully. Really learning how the whole thing works, that's also with mediations. Making sure people get along, working with teams, and also when people have conflicts, working through those conflicts. I mean, the wealth of knowledge that I got through my rez experience has been unbelievable.

Savva : I remember meeting you actually last year, when I was in rez, I was on Ben Crawford's floor.

Steeves : Third or fourth?

Savva : Third.

Steeves : Okay, cool

Savva : We definitely played frisbee together at one point or another when you had your long hair.

Steeves : Yeah, I had crazy long hair last year ha ha.

Savva : What was your favorite SFUO event this year?

Steeves : This year, my favorite SFUO event? That's a tough question, I guess I would have to say that um.... Guerre des Tuques took it huge! What a cool thing. Watching those massive monstrosities being built. Like that it what an SFUO event should be like, there is no way you can do it by yourself. You needed resources, you needed time, you needed peoples energy, you needed leadership. That's what an event should be, you need leadership.

Savva : Who do you think is your strongest opponent?

Steeves : My strongest opponent?

Savva : Yeah, for president.

Steeves : I think that myself. I think that the key thing is to getting the word out to as many people out as possible and doing that in an effective way is the most difficult thing.

Savva : And do you eat Greek food?

Steeves : Of course

Savva : Do you like lamb?

Steeves : Yeah! Souvlaki, lamb, whatever!

I just got a phone call from an anonymous source telling me that Tyler Steeves, presidential candidate for the SFUO has been breaking some election rules.

This is rumors at it's finest!

So here's the story, I found out that Steeves' posters are 12 x 18. Regulation has it that you're only allowed posters 11 x 17 and if any bigger they are considered to be "banners". You're only allowed one banner per building.

While I was in the UCU today, Chaput rolled on by with fortune cookies!! They were bright pink and green (just like his poster colors) and each one of them had the slogan above.

Laura Rashotte

Rashotte was in the UCU today, and she gave me a few words on her campaign. She's running for one out of three B.O.A. positions for the faculty of Health Sciences. There are three of them running "vote yes for everyone" she said.

Laura is pretty optimistic about her campaign. "I've only really done two class presentations."

Not too long ago Khadijah Kanji said that Laura is "better than an empty chair". Khadijah, along with Sam Spady are supporting Rashotte in her campaign.

Avez-vous ramassé la nouvelle édition de La Rotonde aujourd'hui? En effet, ce journal est une édition spéciale portant sur les élections.

le journal francophone de l'Université d'Ottawa présente les candidat(e)s (comme tout le monde le fait). Par contre, elle font leurs choix des meilleurs candidats pour les divers postes de l'exécutif de la FÉUO.

ALSO, not only do they talk about the candidates, but they have an article about the bloggers! "Je crois que toute l'équipe de La Rotonde se rejouit de leur venu."

They talk about four blogs in perticular : Serge Miville (obviously), Kyle Ryc, Samuel Breau and me!

I stopped by the Communication's Student Association Office in the double basement of the library and ran into Bruce Landry, a friend of mine. He had a few things to say about the SFUO elections that have been going on, so he wrote this excerpt himself :

"As someone who thought long and hard about running for VP social this year before deciding against it for personal reasons, I find it kind of disappointing that candidates for this position are making promises in their class presentations that are impossible to accomplish. It is ridiculous to suggest opening 101 Week to everyone – this wouldn't be fair to executives or to 101ers. The performances that Jean Guillaume is guaranteeing would set the SFUOs 101 Week budget back for at least 2-3 years. I just hope that students can tell the difference between realistic promises, and the ones that are being made just to gain their votes.

With the polling days starting tomorrow, I hope students get informed before they cast their ballots. Vote for realistic goals, and promises that can be fulfilled."

Miatta Gorvie, candidate for the B.O.G. for Social Sciences was spotted today with Philanthropic Director for PIDSSA, Sam Spady in the UCU.

Gorvie, looking stunning as usual gave me a few words about her campaign. She said that it was hard to be every where all the time because she is in Co-op, but so far so good. "I have good volunteers", that's always key to a good campaign.

I also asked her why she was running for this position, and she said that "this is the year that I started to understand that there's a place for me on the SFUO. I mean why not? It's my school too."

I have to give this girl some HUGE bonus points when she said that she loved Greek food. Gorvie is a circumstantial vegetarian but that lamb is good when she's out. Atta girl Miatta!

Kishek's "Speed Dating"

Today in the UCU I ran into Amy Kishek, candidate for the B.O.G. She had a table set up saying "Meet the Candidate" where she provided cookies, muffins, and fruit for everyone that passed by.

She was there for hours today meeting everyone that she could and spending time with them to answer questions, or just to talk.

She said that she would love to get the chance to talk to every student here at the University of Ottawa, but in a week and a half, it's not too possible. Therefore she came up today with this table that she referred too as "speed dating". She said that "I would love to take every one out to coffee so that they can get to know me, but it is impossible to meet up with the whole school, so what I'm doing here is like speed dating!".

At least she came up with an alternative!

Peter Flynn en français?

J'étais très surprise de découvrir cette fin de semaine que mon boss Peter Flynn était capable de communiquer en français! This is a big deal since I (along with many others) thought that he was 110% anglophone!

This weekend, none of the candidates were to be found!

Some were at Model Parliament, some were sleeping, some were (probably) drunk off their asses, but Dominic Villeneuve sent me a few e-mails!!!

I think that the candidates are tiered. I sure am!

Hopefully they get a good weekend of rest (and catch up on readings) because Monday is the day before the first voting day and they need to get their class presentations ready!

As for this weekend, be sure to go to Winterlude! I'm working at the Rogers tent at Confederation Park so come say hi, and maybe grab me a coffee? I froze my ass off tonight.

The end of another 1848 soirée

Seamus Wolfe, another presidential candidate stopped by 1848 tonight near closing hour to relax after a long day of campaigning.

He told me that "bannagers is a very good shot". I have no idea what a bannager is, or if I even spelt it right, but it might be tasty!

I then asked him how his elections are going (probably the most boring question ever, I'll come up with something better soon) and he told me that they were going great and that he's having a lot of fun.

I eventually came up with a pretty good and controversial question : who is your strongest opponent? He also came up with a good answer : "High tuition fees and inaccessible education".

Never loose those roots Wolfe.

Allan Rock...I mean Marc Kelly

I had the pleasure of meeting Marc Kelly today. Not going to lie, he's a very down to earth guy. I was not expecting this at all actually. Isn't our picture just amazing?

Kelly and I talked a little bit about the campaign, and his relationship with Allan Rock, the President of the University of Ottawa."I honestly just want Rock and I to get along. I just want him to realize that I'm really not that bad" said Kelly in the Terminus ce soir while coming out of 1848.

We eventually found Wassim. He was working hard in the Zoom office. I also found out that Zoom & Wassim are starting an elections documentary.

I have no idea if this is breaking news or not, but I am allowed to post it, so I'm guessing it something to talk about. Maybe I'll even get a cameo appearance?

In other news, Wassim's favorite poster on this wall is la Révolution électorale published in La Rotonde. He believes that this article "shows how important this election is".

I personally have not read it yet, but I most likely will in the near future.

This is Mr. Grey. He is another BOA candidate for the faculty of Social Sciences. He is also a second year DVM (Development student). I only met him this year with the Drop Fees campaign, but I hear that he is pretty awesome. He believes in a sustainable campus, education, and community.

Not only is Seamus getting banners torn down, so is BOA candidate (social sciences) Kyle Simunovic. By the looks of it he was pretty fucking pissed off.

"Whatever, no big deal, I'll just get a new one" he said moments after he found out.

Bashing other candidates is one thing, but taking down prime spot banners, that's a little low.

As much as I love Tristan, he's one of my best friends, not a lot of people are very happy with him right now. Drama, drama, drama!

So I walk into 1848 tonight and saw first hand how pissed off people were. It is true that Tristan is working under Julie, and that she's the one that gave him the job, but he feels that his freedom of speech is much more important than the situation.

I can't wait to get a word with the convict candidate. It fits, and I think that the posters are great!

I am heading to 1848 tonight for Thrifty Thursdays and I am hoping to see this man there to potentially get a comment on how his campaign is going. And most likely get a beer before heading to the library to finish a project.

Arts will be having a meet and greet with the Senate and BOA candidates on Monday Feb. 9th so that their students can get to know who they will be voting for. It's being held at Café Alt (in Simard) from 11:00am to 3:00pm.

Presentations - Présentations

So here are some of my thoughts on the presentations :

Austin - He spoke very well in French. I'm pretty sure that he's getting better, maybe even taking some lessons since the CFS campaign. He is a fourth year Political Science student (go PIDSSA go). "Je veux fournir des bourses réalistes pour les étudiant(e)s."

RPG - "Je suis étudiant en philosophie, certains croient que nous avons nos têtes dans les nuages." As per usual, Renaud stole the crowd, he got the most noise at the end, and I do have to say, he is an incredible speaker! He said "je veux un comité éthique" and "la FÉUO ne fonctionne pas, j'aimerais que ça commence à fonctionner". Well done.

Tristan - He's no longer a candidate for the SFUO executive position of VP Communications, and now Julie Séguin is running unopposed. So, he started a no campaign against her. "Votez NON pour Julie Séguin" he said in his brief presentation. Visit the website here.

Dominic Villeneuve - He also had a great presentation, and I have to admit that I was impressed. As I'm writing this blog, he's taking notes in class, something that I should be doing at the moment... He is a student in Political Science and Public Administration (again, go PIDSSA go!). Dans sa campagne, il veut voir dans le comité de gouverneurs de la transparence et de la liberté intellectuelle. Il veut aussi avoir un blog, si il est élu, pour que les étudiant(e)s soient au courrant de ce qui ce passe chez les gouverneurs ainsi de "ce qui se passe avec notre argent".

Aminka Belvitt - Girl you are brave! As you may know, Aminka is an anglophone but she came into my class and gave it her best shot. It was hard to understand her French, but I'm very proud that she braved a classroom of francophones and spoke French as best as she could. At the end she explained her ideas a bit more in English saying that "you can read a platform, but not a person".

That's basically what happened at the beginning of class. As for what's going on now... something about la procédure administrative type (simplifiée). Maybe I should start listening.

Peter Flynn

As I was stopping by the PIDSSA office on the second floor Desmarais, I ran not only into Kyle, but also our director of promotions, Peter Flynn.

Basically, he's my boss within the PIDSSA world. He is a great guy and I have to admit, he has become friends with my couch since the bus strike started. I don't mind at all since he's repaid me with beers. Got to love a guy who buys you beer... or maybe it's just me.

Peter Flynn is running for the BOA of Social Sciences. I wish him all the best of luck. His posters are pretty damn awesome and I can't wait to see what he has in store for the next couple of days.

Kyle Simunovic

Well, well, well... Mr. Simunovic, the double-take, go for the gold candidate here in the PIDSSA headquarters!

Kyle is a third and a half year Political Science and Communications student here at the University. He is running for the Senate and the BOA for the faculty of Social Sciences. Some people think that he wants to rule the world, but I think that he is just a ridiculously tall teddy bear.

There have been rumors that Kyle received four thousand dollars from various sponsors, however he assures me that his fundraising schemes have been legit and from a wide variety of demographics, including his lovely, and overly generous mother.

"I have probably raised about 2 000 to 2 700 dollars!"

Good job Kyle, we knew you had connections, but damn boy, this is great!
